Cascades Partners with the Centre for Sustainable Development

Montreal, September 3, 2009 – Cascades is pleased to announce that it is contributing to setting up the Centre for Sustainable Development by donating $150,000. This announcement is in line with the Centre’s major 2008–2012 Corporate Funding campaign, whose goal is to collect $5 M over five years.

“Cascades has always focused on protecting the environment. Forty-five years ago, before the term “sustainable development’ had even come into being, we were applying the main principles, concerned about the impact on the environment, the economy and the social system when we made decisions,” stated Alain Lemaire, President and CEO of Cascades. “The Centre for Sustainable Development initiative is in line with our values and vision, and it was an obvious choice for Cascades to get involved with it. It will enable organizations working to preserve our environment to share their resources. This synergy will be to their advantage,” added Mr. Lemaire.

Sidney Ribaux, President of the Centre, goes even further by pointing out that “there is a natural link between the Centre for Sustainable Development and Cascades. Cascades is a pioneer in sustainable development, and we are proud to be able to count on such a renowned Québec company.”

Centre for Sustainable Development

Eight organizations from social and environmental sectors — Équiterre, Centre de la petite enfance Le Petit Réseau, Centre québécois du droit de l’environnement, Conseil régional de l’environnement de Montréal, ENvironnement JEUnesse, Option consommateurs, Regroupement du service Éco-quartier, Regroupement national des conseils régionaux de l’environnement du Québec — have come together to create the Centre for Sustainable Development, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to build and operate in downtown Montreal a green demo building to inspire the actions of the general public and real-estate decision makers.

This social and environmental project will house offices for the eight member-organizations, as well as other organizations that share its values, and will become a place for education and research on sustainable development. The Centre is working toward LEED Platinum certification, the highest possible level in this high-quality green building standardization system. The Centre was off to a strong start with its citizen mobilization campaign on May 6 with Mes Aïeux as ambassador. Visit the www.maisondeveloppementdurable.org for more information.
